Happy Hens at Wester Deans Farm

John and Sheena have farmed at Wester Deans in the Scottish Borders for 25 years and established Happy Hens in 2010 so that their farm can be used as a resource for the local community. The project engages with young people from challenging circumstances who are at risk of educational and social exclusion and enables them to reach their potential by providing opportunities for achievement and personal development in a well-supported agricultural setting. This is achieved by a combination of working on farm, performing real, relevant tasks and being in a positive and encouraging environment. For an accessible case study click here
Children's charity's North Care Farming Initiative
National children’s charity Action for Children has been running a Care Farming Initiative in North East Scotland since June 2010, with the aim of exploring the possible benefits of care farming for some of the organisation’s service users and carrying out a feasibility study on the setting up of a successful and suitable care farming operation that is benchmarked for quality. The work was carried out by a team of four young adults: Leon Morrison, Amy Reynolds, Shalane MacDougall and Robert Dewar (pictured above). Read more here
